Nehemiah became increasingly concerned about the problems that were arising 'within' the camp. He was especially grieved and angry that some were taking advantage, and making money at the expense of other peoples poverty. Usury, something which God had expressly forbidden, was taking place, and the selling of one's own children into slavery in order to alleviate a family's poverty was also happening.
Instead of an habitual respect for God and His ways, some of the people seemed to be more anxious to seek their counsel among the ungodly, instead of looking to God for the blessing which they desired.
Upon what to we pattern our walk? Where do week our counsel? Is our Christianity credible, and does the life we live as Christians evidence that we walk in the "fear of our God", determined that we will not be resonsible for bringing the reproach of the enemies of God upon the church, or indeed upon our nation. Should we not rather live and labour with a love and compassion for the 'brethren', fighting the battle with God's help and being at peace with Him.
