In Romans seven Paul begins by showing how we have been released from the law through the body of Christ, just as a woman is released from the law of marriage by the death of her husband. We have died to the law through Christ so that we could be joined to our risen savior and live in newness of life. Paul next describes the horror and frustration of finding himself a sinner after he had been saved, and unable in the strength of his own flesh to do the things that he knew he should do. He finds himself, as one not relying on the power of the Holy Spirit, to be a wretched man, sold into bondage to sin. At the end of the chapter he raises our eyes to the answer found only in the Lord Jesus Christ, which he will deal with in chapter eight.
