If I ask the people in the world, what was Jesus' purpose, I would expect to hear answers like, Jesus was a good teacher. He taught people how to live and love. He was a revolutionary. He tried to change society and free the oppressed. But the real question is for those of you in this room this morning. What do you think Jesus' purpose was? After everything was said and done, what was the expected outcome of Jesus' life? Doesn't verse 1 tell us? What did Jesus pray? "Glorify your Son that the Son may glorify You." Sometimes, I think we can get a little confused about what Jesus' ultimate purpose was. I think it can be easy for us to think that Jesus' purpose on earth is ultimately about us. We might confess, "Yeah, Jesus came to live and die in order to be my Savior," but then we stop right there, and forget that Christ's purpose was more than just for me. Sometimes I think we can be very selfish with Jesus. We can have the attitude that Jesus is about me. Jesus is my lucky charm. Jesus is my get-out-of-hell card. Jesus is my Santa Clause. We can have a very selfish idea of who Jesus is. This could very well lead us to be quite surprised when we discover what is really real.
