A universal characteristic of the human race is the burden and longing for peace. All people are preoccupied with securing peace in their own hearts, if not in their relationships with other people and in the world at large. Troubled times, like those being experienced today, only heighten that longing. And yet the sad truth is that, in this world, peace is unavailable and unattainable. People have looked to ideology, education, government, and even religion to secure peace, but all have failed. The reason is that peace on the horizontal level - personal and interpersonal peace - is a byproduct of peace with God, and no human philosophy, commitment or resource can effect this. The human race's estrangement from God yielded estrangement in every relationship within the created order: man with man; man with the earth; man with himself. This comprehensive estrangement makes peace impossible, and the only remedy is the restoration that Christ has inaugurated in the new creation. This is the message of Christmas; this is the meaning of "peace on earth."
