We don't know enough about our God. David has sinned grievously against God, yet he appeals to Him. "O God" (verse 1) is "Elohim," the One that is to be feared above all, but also the name of our Covenant God. David comes to God on this basis, that He is the One who has lovingkindness, and a multitude of tender mercies toward His children. To know what God has promised us is to be able to pray aright. This is one of the greatest psalms on repentance and forgiveness.
