Paul is urging us to the grace of humility so that we might live in unity as God's people. He holds Jesus' humility before us as the example & substance of our humility. We've seen Jesus' humility displayed at the point of His incarnation (v6,7) & now, in v8, we consider the humility of Jesus displayed in His incarnate state. We see His humility in His continued obedience, an obedience that cost Him His very life. Jesus considered obedience to His Father as more important than life & He obeyed "to the point of death" - & Paul adds: "even death on a cross." We, who make jewelry of crosses, have no real appreciation for just how repulsive death on the cross was in Paul's day. But we are called to obey, even at great personal expense, even in a path that is repulsive to our inclinations. This is the way of humility: submissively doing the will of God regardless of the challenges from without & within.
