God's Gift of Life to the World (John 6:1-35) Introduction: Disappointed with God?
Exposition 1. The Fourth Sign (6:1-13): Jesus provides miraculous food for the multitude.
2. The False Expectations (6:14-15, 22-26): They see a deliverer from hunger and Roman domination. "For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me" (John 5:46-47, see 5:39, 2Kings 4:42-44). Also, it was Passover when they remembered how they "had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea," (Exod 14:29). And were fed with manna from heaven (see Num 11:1-13 for many parallels).
See Deut 18:15-19.
3. The Food Which Endures to Everlasting Life (6:26-35): I am the Bread of Life
Application 1. Men who misunderstand are ready to take Jesus by force as their king (v. 14-15) See Ps 50:17-21.
2. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life (v. 26-27) See Deut 8:2-3.
3. Believing in Jesus is the true key to life (v. 35) "Men try to dam the brook, but leave the fountainhead untouched." Indwelling sin and rebellion against God is at the root of the wretchedness of the world. Free men from the power of sin, and bring their hearts and minds to submit to God, and it would produce a new world. "Show me a man with an unclean heart and I will undertake, by his faith in Christ, to make him whiter than snow, till he will not know himself to be the same man" (Bunyan Characters, iv, 109-11).
