In the latter part of this chapter Paul contrasts the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart with the law written on stone tablets. In these early verses he makes a contrast between letters of commendation written with ink and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the heart. Paul's epistle of commendation is the ministry of the Spirit who has written the Corinthians' names into Paul's heart. The Spirit flows into and out from Paul and the dynamic of this life-giving Spirit's ministry impacts both Paul and those whom Paul ministers to. Paul's statement that 'the letter kills but the Spirit gives life' is badly misunderstood in our day. This sermon seeks to present a Biblical understanding of these words, an understanding that is vital for every Christian.
