Nimrod's dream becomes Nimrod's nightmare when dreamt by the future leader of Nimrod's old kingdom. Nebuchadnezzar dreams of himself as a great tree, providing unity, peace and prosperity for the whole world. Yet his dream turns into a nightmare when he sees the ax laid to the base of this tree.
Scripture speaks of another tree, the Kingdom of David. This mighty tree was cut to the ground by the Mesopotamian successors of Nimrod, leaving only the seemingly dead stump of Jesse. But out of this old stump, a tiny shoot grows, the Rod of Jesse. This shoot then grows into a mighty tree: 'The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches' (Matthew 13:31, 32). The Rod of Jesse is the Lord Jesus Christ, God's answer to the dream of Nimrod.
