On the last day of Elijah no one thought of Elisha as a potential equal to his master. Elijah was the prophet of fire and whirlwind, a prophet of judgment, a man of presence with grizzled beard and flowing hair. Elisha was a diminutive figure, young and balding. When Elijah asks Elisha what he can give him before he goes, Elisha asks to be given a double measure of his spirit, and even Elijah states that he has made a difficult request.
But nothing is impossible with God. He may take away the prophet Elijah, but he won't leave Israel without a prophet to defend the truth, even if the prophet is nothing like the one he is replacing.
