There are many legitimate ways one can briefly describe the power and glory of the appearance of the long-awaited Savior and the gospel message which preaches repentance and faith in Him. Or to put it another way, what is the gospel? The Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit said, "…Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…." (I Timothy 1:15) This is about as simple (and profound) as it gets. Yet it does not fully express the significance of what the Savior accomplished in His incarnation, suffering and resurrection. We mortals cannot comprehensively plumb the depths of such mysteries, but we can know what the Scriptures reveal and teach. Such a revelation is given in the text today. The coming of Christ was not that you and I would merely escape the fires of hell – as glorious as that is – but that the Lord would, "…put all things under His feet…" (Ephesians 1:22) And in saving His people it was not only for us, "…but for [His] holy name's sake…." (Ezekiel 36:22) The coming of Christ includes conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgment. – Pastor Schlegel
