One of the most famous pieces of classical western music is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring", by Johann Sebastian Bach. The title itself expresses one of the greatest truths of human existence: the longing for reconciliation with The Creator who is holy and offended. It is an expression of the innate knowledge in every human made in God's image that he will confront the eternal Judge at some point and that that encounter will not be a pleasant one. Many unbelievers suppress this longing or seek to fulfill it in ungodly ways. Fallen man will create his own false savior in a failing attempt to calm his fears and answer his perceived needs. But the title points to the biblically-revealed eternal purpose of God to provide the answer to the longing for a savior and reconciliation with God: Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. It expresses the joy of seeing the fulfillment of the ancient promise of one who would crush the serpent's head. What joy there is when we see with the eyes of faith the One who conquered death and sin and who embodies the promise of "God with us." That is, the one who reconciles us to God and restores the fellowship of peace. How can we not worship and break out in song at the revelation of Jesu, the fulfillment of our desire– Pastor Schlegel
