Peter tells us that Noah's ark and baptism are figures of salvation (I Peter 3:20-22). Noah was not saved by a gradual reformation but a death sentence was declared. Noah must enter the ark and die to this carnal world. Baptism sets forth the very same message; tat salvation is by death and burial. All flesh must be dead to God, must appear with Christ; not improved, not made better. The believer must come forth in resurrection life resting completely in the merit and mercy of God.
