There are a number of texts in Scripture that insist we must endure or persevere in order to be saved. Like the words of Jesus in Matthew 10:22 and 24:13, "He who endures to the end will be saved." In John 8:30-31 He said to people who believed, ""If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed", which surely means that without continuing we are not truly His disciples. We find a number of "if" passages, like 1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Colossians 1:23; Hebrews 3:6 & 14. These and other verses make it clear that only those who continue are saved. However, we also find many verses affirming that those who are truly saved are forever saved and safe, as Philippians 1:6, "He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ", and John 10:28, Jesus gives His sheep "eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand." In John 6:39 He affirmed that He would lose none of those given to Him by the Father, but would raise every one of them up the last day. How are we to understand these two sets of verses? They do not contradict each other, but together they teach that true Christians MUST continue with Christ, and that they most certainly will.
