In the midst of our confusing world, both among professing Christians and among total pagans, I think it is helpful to realize that our calling as Christians today is not different from the calling of God's people since the time of Christ. Our central calling is to follow our Lord and Savior, both in His suffering and triumph, by following the Word of God, and by seeking to learn from the successes and failures of God's people throughout history. It is dangerous and even deadly simply to follow tradition. But it is also dangerous and deadly to attempt to reinvent everything, constantly thinking that new is always better. We know there are troubling portions of the history of the Church – heresies, political intrigues, corruption, and hypocrisy. But these things should never discourage us from seeking to follow Christ and to identify ourselves as Christians, part of the body of Christ. These things should not discourage us from seeking to live as a local congregation, attempting to love each other as we are commanded and to fulfill the calling that we have together as a local church. 1.
