God says through Solomon, "The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel" (Proverbs 12:10). The mercy of the wicked is not truly compassionate, but cruel according to the Lord (Jeremiah 6:22-23). How is the mercy of the wicked cruel? The government lockdowns of businesses and churches are claimed to be merciful in not spreading a virus; but yet they are cruel in sending people into poverty and making it unlawful to worship the Lord. Their mercy is also cruel in tolerating that which is evil (false religion) and immoral (abortion), for they not only do not prevent the judgment of God, but encourage it to fall upon a rebellious nation. Is it merciful to tolerate your child slapping you, punching other children, or setting the house on fire? Of course not! That's not merciful; that's cruel to the child. It is preparing him for misery in this life and for hell in the life to come. That's cruelty, not mercy. So it is true to tolerate the slapping of God in laws that break His commandments. That is why it is so important that we understand what true mercy is and is not.
