The ninth of the ten commandments is given to promote the truth. I love my neighbor by being honest in my testimony. The PRECEPT here is clear, "You shall not bear false witness." When examined, this means to never provide a lying testimony about another individual - no distortions, fabrications, malicious gossip or blatant lies. This is explained in Deuteronomy 19:15-21 where two or three witnesses are required to confirm a matter - a single witness is suspect and must be investigated thoroughly. The POINT of this command is driven home in Ephesians 4:25 where believers are instructed to: remove falsehood from their new lives in Christ; require only truth to be spoken between neighbors; and recognize that the reason for this radical change from the past is because we are now members of one another in the body of Christ.
