Esther and Mordecai were beneficiaries of the king's favor, but the decree of death still stood for all the Jews. So Esther went a second time and pleaded with the king for the lives of her people.
The king's reponse was that he had done what he could -- Haman's decree could not be revoked. But then the king authorized a second decree that effectively nullified the first. Even though the permanent mark of Haman's evil could not be rescinded, a new command could be written over top of it.
We'll consider in this message how the Gospel is God's "counter-decree." Because God is just and righteous, He cannot simply overlook our sins or pretend they never happened. Neither can he revoke the decree of death written against our sin.
But the Gospel counters the decree of death by writing over top of it. God fulfilled the demands of the first decree by dying for our sin, in our place, on the Cross. The decree of death against us being effectively nullified by Jesus, we can now receive the benefit and blessing of the second decree through faith in Christ.
