INTRO: We are in the second book of the minor prophets, the book of Joel. Joel 1:1 is the introduction to this, the second book of the minor prophets (read). The name Joel means 'Jehovah is God'. His father's name was Pethuel, of whom we don't know anything further.
Now, the dates when each of these books were written are very important because from the dates we get a fairly good idea of what kind of time the prophet was addressing. However, this book does not tell us which king or kings reigned at this time so it is more difficult to determine the date. Probably most conservative scholars agree with Charles Ryrie who says this book is written about 835 BC. If so, Joel would have lived during the time of Elijah and Elisha. You will recall from the book of 2 kings that there were many prophets in those days. If Joel wrote at this time, it makes him perhaps the first of the writing prophets. Elijah and Elisha left no writings, so they are some of the non-writing prophets.
