Beginning in verse 25, Paul presents a series of specific exhortations aimed at fostering behavior appropriate to the "new self." There are conscious links with the preceding paragraph: the verb "put off" has already been used in verse 22 with reference to laying aside the old self, while the key notion of putting on the "new self" is picked in verse 24. We are to put off all falsehood, which characterizes the old manner of life. But it is not enough to give up lying, we are to speak the truth to our neighbors.
