The inspired Apostle sought to paint as black a picture as possible of those who had professed to believe the truth but then had abandoned the truth and were trying to induce others to do the same. They were marked by immorality as are all those who have repudiated the truth and they look for unstable souls whom they can deceive into following their pernicious ways. Ultimately, those who follow such a course are going in the way of Balaam. But even in the gloom of Peter's description of those who are true apostates, he observes that there is a right way in which to go and that there are people who go in that way. It is the way of faith in Christ, the way of the Gospel of a full justification.
