Aim: To demonstrate humble faith, and not proud presumption.
Doctrine: The Christian's time on earth is to be faith-saturated—assuming nothing aside from Christ. Those who brazenly map-out their life's path (independently of God) will find themselves destitute of grace (now), and glory (later).
Exegesis: Why trusting, not boasting is so important: Because it rightly acknowledges the brevity of our stay in this world (vv. 13-17); because it wisely submits everything to God (vv. 15-16); because it demonstrates the reality of regeneration (in our souls)(v. 17).
Further application: How the church practically applies verses like these: We are not barred from making any definite plans, but we are required to subsume them all under God's will.
Key verse: v. 15 ''Instead you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.'''
