Cleopas and his companion left Jerusalem in defeat because they thought that all was lost. However, the mysterious figure that met them on the road back home revealed to them that they were wrong headed. They had not read the Scriptures properly and saw things from a purely carnal perspective. No, in order to understand the Scriptures Jesus demonstrated that His Word must be read with His work in view. Scriptures don't make sense unless they are read with Christ in mind.
