The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is immutable. In this context applies this truth to the situation of Christians facing trouble and temptation for their encouragement: 1. Jesus is The Same Glorious Person - Despite man's repeated attempts to redefine Jesus and shrink Him down, He remains the same glorious person He always was - This statement is on a par with remarkable declaration from the OT regarding the immutability of God - This statement is true but also mysterious in light of other texts that speak of Jesus as changing and growing. - The texts that speak of Jesus as growing and changing are to be understood as relating to His human nature, though this too is mysterious and beyond the grasp of mere reason 2. Jesus is the same gracious Saviour of the world and: - always will be - was ordained to be Saviour before the foundation of the world - was prophesied to be such in the OT - no one else could possibly provide the righteousness required or pay the penalty called for from the law of God for sinful men - must provide righteousness because the immutable God will never lower His standards of perfection - does provide a righteousness for sinful men, one they could never earn - is, thus, the believer's only hope now and forever because He is the same yesterday, today and forever. - is the same gracious Saviour, always loving, always a friend of sinners receiving those who repent and believe.
