The Bible teaches that God is immutable. 1. This is astonishing news to all - it is astonishing to realize that - God does not change in His Being - God does not change in His perfections - God does not change in His purposes - God does not change in His promises 2. This is confusing news to some - though the doctrine of the immutability of God moves us to praise it also raises some questions - What about those passages that speak of God as repenting or relenting? - What about the incarnation - does Bethlehem not mark a change in God? 3. This is terrifying news for unbelievers - The immutability of God means that God will always be holy, always be just, always punish sinners - The immutability of God means that sinners will always be in great danger until they find refuge in Christ 4. This is glorious news for Christians - the fact that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever is glorious because - it means His love for us is unchanging - it means His power on our behalf is undiminished - it means His promises to us are unfailing - it means His presence with us is unabating - it means that we have every reason to trust Him in all things.
