We often think that repentance is to be sad about our sin, but, in his second epistle to the Corinthians, Paul warns them that "the sorrow of the world worketh death." This "sorrow of the world" is merely a sorrowful—and sinful—response to the consequences of sin, not a sorrow over the wicked offensiveness of sin itself. This “godly sorrow” is directed towards God, and comes from God in regeneration. Godly sorrow will always lead to faith in Christ, and this to glorifying God.
