Israel had begun the conquest with a great victory at Jericho that was sadly followed by a great defeat. The defeat was a consequence for an individual's disobedience that necessitated the nation acting in obedience by punishing the disobedient one.
The enemies Israel is facing in their conquest of the land are beginning to unite to war against them. One particular group chooses a different approach of deception by approaching Israel as a people from a distant land to make a covenant of peace with them. Without consulting the Lord, Joshua and the Israelites choose to enter into a binding covenant agreement with them. The consequences will be far-reaching for the nation. In a very short time it will prove to have been a poor decision that confirms the fact that they need to seek the Lord's counsel in all their decision-making. Not all situations and circumstances are in reality what they appear to be - and only the Lord knows for sure - so His counsel is once again proven to be an absolute necessity for His people. Such a fact continues to be true for us as His people down through today!
