Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, parenting is hard. The biggest experts are the ones with the fewest children. We all know this, and even joke about it. But with that said, the passage before us this evening gives four descriptors of proper Christian parenting. That's right. Parenting, at least from the perspective of Ephesians 6, can be boiled down to four absolute non-negotiables. We are going to look at those tonight. Once again, remember the context. This is the household code, in which Paul calls us as redeemed people to walk in harmony. Parents, how do you make your home a harmonious place, a place which makes sweet music to the glory of Jesus Christ? You do it by following these four simple directions. I didn't say they were easy. I'm a parent, and I know they're not easy. But they are simple. Here they are: Don't provoke; instead, nurture your children, instruct them, and correct them. That's right. Nourish/nurture; instruct/discipline; instruct/admonish. The words in Greek don't have exact English equivalents. But with the slash and the hyphen, we should be able to arrive at fairly close approximations. Parents, these are the four things that you should do in your parenting to honor God.
