When a person comes to faith in Christ, his or her identity is not the only thing that changes. One's calling in life does too. We now exist to proclaim the excellencies of God in worship and in witness! For far too long, we have viewed the pastor as a professional whose job is to do all the ministry of the church while everyone else looks on as spectators. Billy Sunday once remarked that the pastor is not some sort of ecclesiastical locomotive who will huff and puff and pull the whole church to glory. The pastor is rather to equip the church to do the work of ministry. How can we engage in the "one anothering" of Scripture if the pastor is expected to do it all? The doctrine of the priesthood of all believers provides that all believers in Christ share in His priestly status. We are to be God's holy people whose lives are marked by godliness and the fruit of the Spirit. We live as salt and light in the various spheres of our culture and world, in which we have our respective vocations. Every Christian is called first and foremost to live unto the Lord in the unique world that the Lord has assigned to him or her. And there is no greater satisfaction than to be used of the Lord!
