Obadiah’s short but straightforward book is all about judgement on the enemies of the Lord, typified in the people of Edom, Israel's oldest and most persistent enemy. The Edomites were judged not only for their actions against the Israelites, but because of their attitude to the Lord’s people. The Lord protects his people.
At the end of the prophecy however there is a promise of hope that is broader than the nation of Israel. The Lord will build a kingdom that will not be Israel’s but the Lord’s. Both godly Zion and ungodly Edom fade out of sight at the promise of the Messiah - “the Kingdom shall be the Lord’s.”
