We break the Ten Commandments. Jesus is fully God and Fully man — He is the law-giver Himself. As a result, as the Mediator He can rightly and faithfully teach what the commandments truly mean. That is why Jesus says, "But I say to you…" He is not necessarily adding something new all the time but he is instructing us as to what the commandment truly means. I. Adultery includes more than the sinful act. 1. Consistent with the OT. 2. We sin more than we think. 3. There are degrees of sin! 4. Sin starts from the heart. II. Christ calls for mortification and not mutilation. 1. Jesus tells us it will cost us: "better that you lose one of your members." 2. Jesus is teaching us that sin is exceedingly sinful and dangerous! III. The Lord uses the threat of hell as the motive to overcoming sexual sin. This is a point brilliantly made by Matthew Henry. "There are some sins from which we need to be saved with fear, particularly fleshly lusts, which are such natural brute beasts as cannot be checked, but by being frightened; cannot be kept from a forbidden tree, but by cherubim, with a flaming sword." IV. The Gospel can cover all our sexual sins.
