This chapter contrasts the unfaithful servant, collective Israel, with the faithful Servant, Jesus Christ. This chapter contains the third of four "servant songs," in which Christ is called, commissioned, changed, and serving the will of God to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.
In this chapter, the Lord answers Israel's charge that He has forsaken her (49:14). The Lord responds by requesting the proof of it. No, it was not the Lord who forsook the people, but their iniquities and transgressions separated them from Him.
The contrast is made then with Christ, who willingly suffered to bring salvation to the people of God (vv. 4-9).
Verses 10 and 11 appeal to God's people to trust in Him when they walk in darkness. They must not light their own torches to light the way, as Israel has done.
