If one were to read the Book of Jude up to verse 16 and not read the end of this short letter, one would be left with a very pessimistic view of the future of the church. One would have a dim view of the success of the church in promoting the truth and in advancing the cause of her Head, the Lord Jesus Christ. But the fact is, that the Holy Spirit inspired Jude to write verses 17 through 25 and these verses are, I believe, intended to give the people of God hope, confidence, and courage: fervent hope that the future is not a dark one, but one of a glorious end; confidence that the Lord is in control of all things, even though the day-to-day experiences are such that we could easily become discouraged and begin to wonder; courage to contend for the truth even though the spirit of the age is such that the truth is despised and the embodiment of the Truth, the Lord Jesus Christ, is rejected and even blasphemed. These final verse provide concrete admonitions regarding what we are to do and how to do it especially when the trials come. The context of the letter is doctrinal trial in the church, but these admonitions apply whether the trials are of a personal nature or a corporate nature. We would do well to remember them and do them. – Pastor Schlegel
