It is good that we remember the many great men and women who faithfully served the Lord in life and death. Hebrews 12 reminds us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. William Carey the great missionary challenged people with his famous words, Attempt great things for God; expect great things from God. William Carey also once stated, I can plod. But as we consider the great men and women who have gone before us we have to remember that our goal is not that we seek to become famous one day by doing something spectacular for the sake of God's kingdom. The great men and women of old did not simply work alone. The influence of John Calvin in part was the result of many other faithful men and women who worked with him both in Geneva and throughout Europe. And so although we must seek first to be faithful as individual disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ we also must seek then to work together. It is when God's people come together that we accomplish the greatest good for the kingdom. The challenge of Matthew 5:13-16 is that together as God's people we live as salt and light. Together we work and live in fulfilling the great calling and responsibility that we have been given. From verses 13-16, I would like you to consider 3 things. 1. The simple but profound imagery that Jesus uses. 2. Grace and Responsibility. 3. The Command and Goal.
