Back in Hebrews 5:10-11 we read: "Concerning Melchizedek we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing." Dull of hearing... As in, too spiritually immature (or worse) to grasp the vital connection between the mysterious Old Testament priest Melchizedek, and the Great High Priest of our steadfast hope, Jesus. But now it is time to press ahead with the lesson, so let every listener (4) "pay attention to this great man"! We'll consider how Melchizedek symbolizes a priesthood that is greater than Levi's as: i.) he is identified as a symbol of Jesus (vv.1-3); ii.) he is explained as honored by Levi (vv.4-6); iii.) he is revealed as greater than Levi (vv.7-10).
