We may be tempted to think that upon the Ascension of our LORD that the two millennia since then Christ has been comparatively languid in His Priestly work. But that is not what the Scripture teaches. Scripture teaches that Christ's priestly work continues. Our LORD is interceding for His people.
Hebrews 7:25 teaches that Christ always lives to intercede for those who come to God through Him.
Likewise, Romans 8:34
Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. I John 2:1
We should make it clear at the outset that when we speak of our Great High priest interceding that we are speaking in terms of particularity. Just as Jesus' priestly work of satisfaction for sin was and is only for His elect, so it is the case that the intercession of Christ is particular only for His elect.
John 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
John 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
How inconsistent would it be to believe that Christ died only for His people but did His work of intercession for anybody but for whom He performed His work of satisfaction?
I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; John 17:9
