Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, my parents, with 11 children, are regularly asked what they do for sex ed. My mother always says, “That’s easy. We use the Bible!” And indeed, our passage this morning is a sex ed passage — not in the sense of describing how to engage in sexual behavior, but rather in the sense of warning against misuse of one’s sexual powers. We continue our look this morning at Solomon’s profiles in folly. Remember, chs. 5-7 all describe the behavior of the fool, and they particularly highlight his sexual folly. The fool sleeps around. The fool does what comes easy with his sexuality, rather than doing what’s right. But the father who truly cares instructs his son in wisdom. Wisdom says not to commit adultery! And indeed, this lesson in particular warns against adultery with a married woman. This warning is not trying to imply that other sexual sins are somehow acceptable, any more than the opening chapter, with its warning against joining a gang, was trying to imply that other forms of violence and theft are acceptable. The point of this passage is to warn sons that adultery brings punishment, but that the Father’s wisdom will protect you from sin and teach you to fear its consequences.
