Theme: The finished work of Christ gives us the privilege of entering into the presence of God. In vv. 44-45, the signs are revealed. The first sign is that of darkness This is in contrast to His birth, which was announced by the light of the glory of God. In His death, darkness comes upon the earth, which in the Bible represents that the judgment of God was upon Him. This occurrence should cause us to understand the righteousness of God. The second sign was that of the curtain being torn in two. This is showing us that we are now able to enter before the throne of God. God's people are finally reconciled and can enter God's presence with full assurance. In v. 46, we read the prayer uttered. Jesus gave His life, no one took it from Him, and in the midst of despair and cruel judgment of others, He is entrusting himself to God. In application, commit all of your life to God's care.
