The gift of tongues has been the subject of much confusion and controversy over the years. We deal with what Paul says based on the hermeneutic of authorial intent. Using material from 1 Corinthians chapters 12, 13 and 14 we explain what is revealed about speaking in tongues.
Issues include whether this gift and some others have ceased, their use in public meetings, and what this implies for us today. We cover passages in 1 Corinthians 14 where Paul corrects some misuse of tongues by pointing to the need for edification of the church. Speaking in languages unknown to those in the congregation does not edify the church.
There is no indication that spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues, has ceased. Those who speak in tongues, according to Paul, speak to God and not to men. Therefore any valid interpretation would be words spoken to God in the common vernacular of the congregation. What is spoken in the gathered church should be in the common vernacular, not in other tongues. It is important that revealed truth from Scripture is spoken so that each member of the body of Christ is edified.
