After being rejected by the people of Nazareth, Jesus moved his mother and his siblings to Capernaum, about 20 miles to the north and on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. As He did in Nazareth, Jesus went to the synagogue to teach. In the text before us, we find an attender who was possessed of an unclean spirit--a demon. This evil spirit mocked Him but also showed fear of Him. He knew who Jesus was and that the day was coming when Jesus would judge and punish him. Jesus told the demon to be silent and come out of the man. Those who witnessed this in the synagogue were amazed. Now they sought Him out, but for the wrong reasons--what He could do for them. They didn't seek Him for who He was and for His salvation, which is what they really needed.
