At this point in Mark’s gospel, we see the popularity of Jesus growing. Many people were coming to Jesus, because they wanted to be healed or get something from him. The gospel of Mark is written to give us a picture of Jesus, the Servant of servants. The theme verse of the book states in Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” There were many in the crowds who just wanted to be served. They really weren’t concerned about the message of Jesus. They just wanted to see what they could get out of Him. Within these crowds, there were a growing number of disciples who were following Jesus. They were committed to His person and works. They were watching and learning from Him. Jesus realized that His time on earth would be limited, and so, He comes to the point in His ministry where He lays the foundation of His church. He will invest His life into the life of the disciples He had chosen to be with Him. He would entrust His work of reaching the world to just a few men in Israel who would take His message to the world. This morning the title will be, “The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.” We will consider the church as 1) The Church is Birthed in Prayer 2) The Church is Blessed with Power and Authority 3) The Church is a Bold Witness in the World through Ordinary People
