The Selfish Pragmatism Of Pilate
Matthew continues his defense of Jesus as King, by recounting how even a pagan, Roman governor recognized the injustice of Jesus' trial and death. Were it not for the insistence of the Jewish priests, who in turn persuaded the people, Jesus would have been found innocent at his trial. Pilate, caught up in these events, chooses what he believes to be the safe route in giving the Jewish leaders what they desire. Pilate is not an overt hater of God. Nor is he openly noble. Rather, Pilate cares about himself first and foremost, and this explains his treatment of Christ. When we see men who are self-protective, it should not surprise us that the cause of God or truth takes second place. Yet, placing God in second place is the same as placing Him last. Whether with animus or apathy, placing anything above God is the greatest sin.
