So much of our attention as Christians is focused on the evil that surrounds us. We of course do not want to be naïve or unaware of what is happening so that we can be more alert in our prayers and action. But the warning that Peter gives here starting in chapter 2 was not a warning about evil and perversion in the Greek and Roman culture of his day. The pagan culture of Peter's day could probably easily match the perversion of our own culture and society. Rather Peter's warning concerned the dangers that were coming from the midst of the beloved people to whom Peter was writing. The danger wasn't merely external but internal. The lesson then for us is not to just be aware of what is taking place in Washington or to watch out for the evil coming out of Hollywood. The danger is much closer. It is watch out for the danger that can come from within the church at large or from within a local church. The central word from our verses this morning is: Be assured that Christ will bring judgment. This is both a word of encouragement and warning for each of us. This morning we will look at verses 1-3. First we will note the warnings and descriptions that Peter gives and second the judgment that he assures will come.
