Chapter 49 begins the second of three sections in the last half of Isaiah. This second section deals with the suffering servant, the true Israel that will not fail the Lord but will accomplish His work. He will be a light to the Gentiles.
Here we find His call and preparation. We also see the means of His saving work, the Word of God. Then, we see His mission. Rejected by the nation at His first coming, it seems as if His work was in vain. Yet, He trusts in the Lord and believes that He will receive a due reward for His suffering.
This hope is realized in that the Lord has given Him the nations for His inheritance and His salvation will reach to the ends of the earth (Rev. 5:9).
Although Israel rejected Him, "Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you" (v. 7).
