Psalm 73:25 establishes a truth that was poignantly expressed throughout history by christians like Augustine, Luther and C.S. Lewis: The only satisfaction for the deep longing in our souls is the redeeming God who made us. Every human being is born with this longing and they spend their lives searching for, as Lewis put it, "they know not what." Idolatry, in all of its various forms, is the attempt to fill the void left by our estrangement from God. Having rebelled against the God who is, fallen humanity sets up idols to take His place. But this is a futile endeavor. Only when we are given spiritual life will we know the source of all satisfaction.
