We talk a great deal about the “Sovereignty of God.” It is important to note that when we discuss His sovereignty, we mean that it is a GOOD trait.
A simple definition of sovereignty is that God has the right to do things according to His will. More specifically, this means a few things:
God is omnipotent, or all powerful.
There are no external constraints on God’s decisions.
At first glance, this sounds reasonable and good. We see how God creates and maintains. He made trees, and they are perfect as they were created. They give shade, clean our air, and some bear fruit that we eat. He made plants, and animals that feed on those plants, and a perfect food chain from there. The earth is held in a perfect spot, granting us the exact sunlight AND gravity we need. We look at creation and determine that God has done and we observe He’s done a pretty good job with the world He created!
But God’s Sovereignty gets a little more challenging when we begin to discuss things like hurricanes, fires, grizzly bears and wars.
We see pain, sometimes destruction and death in these things. And it gets even harder when we talk about things that affect us personally--the diagnosis of cancer; the death of a child; a job loss. Or what about when God seems to do...NOTHING? We cry out to Him for help...for restoration...for protection...and we get nothing in response in that moment. This can cause us to doubt God, both in His goodness and His timing.
Thankfully we see throughout the Bible that while God’s plan often unfolds over years...or even generations ...it DOES come to completion. The rhetorical question asks, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14) We also know that His plan is always best...and importantly, best for us.
His ways are better than our ways, even when they seem tough.
God, in His sovereignty, is “able to do far more abundantly that all we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20) and He does all for His glory AND TO CARE FOR AND PROVIDE FOR HIS PEOPLE! That includes you!
Will you trust God today with your needs? With the big things? Through tough circumstances and over time?
He is all powerful. He loves His people. He is sovereign.
