It’s no secret that the Rio Grande Valley values culture and tradition.
We pride ourselves in events or gatherings that represent our identity as a people. People are the vitality to culture and tradition because apart from them, customs will not be spread or passed down to other generations. Culture and tradition will stop without the influence of the people who believe in it.
As we look at our philosophy on community groups, I can assure you that the vital piece to their success is the people invested in them; not the program. It's the place where the gospel has been believed which means that it will be talked about, celebrated, shared, and passed down to others in our neighborhoods, cities, and precious Valley.
MORE THAN A BIBLE STUDY
A community group is a family of disciples on mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
That pretty much says it all.
In community groups, we study the Bible, share time for prayer, and fellowship together, but that’s not all they are. Those elements are great and absolutely useful, but they fail to encompass the entirety of a community group because they tend to be exclusive. A community group represents three things: family, missionaries to our city, and disciples of Jesus.
FAMILY
A community group is a family that gathers to share life together. It is a family who's hearts have been regenerated by Jesus' work on the cross. This means that they know and have relationship with each other, their struggles, and serve to meet one another's needs. (Luke 8:21, Acts 2:42-47, Romans 12:10-16)
MISSIONARIES
As Jesus calls us to Himself and gives us a new heart with new desires, we are then called to go out and share His gospel through proclamation and practice. A community group works together in order to meet the needs of their city or community; readjusting their lives. Any effort to serve the community around them is now built upon reaching other people. (Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8)
DISCIPLES
Community groups are disciples of Jesus; students. They are learners of what God is showing them through His Word and others around them. Jesus calls us to make disciples of Him in order to expand His kingdom not our own. (Matthew 28:19-20)
THE FINAL APOLOGETIC
While bible studies serve a great purpose, they don't necessarily encourage transformation as much as they do information. Community groups reflect the works and grace of Jesus because of what Jesus has done in and through our lives. (1 Peter 2:9-12)
