For the Local Area Bexleyheath "We thank the Lord for His mercies to us and pray that souls will be saved amongst us. Please uphold our pastor in prayer."
For the Wider Area The Grace World View - Libya Libya is infamous for its dictatorial ruler and harsh government restrictions. Christians are allowed to meet, but their activities are severely limited. The government has been very effective in shielding its citizens from the gospel. Libya is located in North Africa. It shares borders with Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan, and Egypt. The land is almost entirely desert except for a narrow strip on the Mediterranean coast. Little land is suitable for agriculture. Nearly 6 million people live in Libya. Libya contains a mixture of many people groups. The predominant ethnic group is Arab, but there are several other groups including a large number of foreign workers. Libya's economy is based almost entirely on oil production. The discovery of oil has greatly increased the average income, but little of that wealth trickles down to the average person. Because agriculture is limited, Libya must import most of its food. The majority of people are dependent on government subsidies. Libya was under Italian rule between World Wars I & II, and gained independence in 1951. A military coup brought Muammar Qaddafi to power in 1969, and he still maintains power today. The Libyan government is one of the most repressive in the world. Libya is infamous for its sponsorship of terrorism. Islam is the official state religion and accounts for over 96% of the population. Christians among expatriate workers are allowed to meet, but they are closely monitored. There are very few native Libyan believers. Close government supervision has made evangelism practically impossible. No missionaries are allowed. Some expatriate workers have come for the purpose of sharing their faith, but speaking to others is dangerous for all involved. Few native Libyans have ever heard the gospel. Despite the restrictions, there are still means to get the gospel to the people. Several Christian radio stations can be received in Libya. In addition many Libyans have satellite TV on which Christian broadcasts are available. Literature can be smuggled in only with great difficulty. While Libyans traveling outside the country can be reached, their activities are often still monitored. Unfortunately, those reached through radio and TV have no means of follow-up. Pray for courage among the Christians in Libya. Also pray for breaking down of the barriers to the preaching of the gospel.
