For the Local Area Gravesend is the church on our Prayer Diary for the coming week. The church correspondent writes: βPray for our personal and church evangelism, especially as we plan for Christmas. Pray too that we will soon have a pastor.β
The Association of Grace Baptist Churches (East Midlands) is also on the Prayer Diary for the coming week. Praise God for encouraging conversations that Paul Harrison, the Associationβs evangelist, has had in Streatham (Cambridgeshire) and Great Gransden.
For the Wider Area The Grace World View - Lesotho Although most people in Lesotho are classified as Christians, many are nominal. The people continue to show an interest in the things of God, but the terrain makes ministry difficult. Lesotho is an enclave entirely within the nation of South Africa. It is a small, rugged, mountainous territory with little land suitable for agriculture. Approximately 2 million people live in Lesotho. Nearly all of the people are native Sothos. The difficult terrain, lack of ports, and political instability have kept the economy in poor condition. There is little prospect for improvement in the near term. Because job opportunities in Lesotho are limited, one third of the men work outside the country, most in the mines of South Africa. Lesotho gained independence from Great Britain in 1966. Since then, the country has been governed by a series of regimes, many of them military backed and authoritarian. There has been continued civil unrest over the years. In 1998, South Africa invaded Lesotho to restore order. Political stability was finally restored in 2002. There is freedom of religion. Most people in Lesotho are classified as Christian. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest group with more than one third of the population. Most of the Christian churches tend to be nominal. Evangelicals make up a little less than 10% of the population and their numbers have been growing slowly. Traditional African religions are practiced by many and have influence even in Christian churches. Pray for the many missionaries who are working in Lesotho. Because the terrain is so rugged, many villages are only accessible on foot or by aircraft. Mission Aviation Fellowship has a very important ministry in reaching these remote villages. Pray for them as they operate in sometimes dangerous conditions. Many men from Lesotho work in South African mines. Christian ministries at the mines have born fruit. Pray for continued success in these ministries. AIDS in rampant in Lesotho. Pray that the church can meaningfully minister to the needs created by this deadly disease.
