The context of this address to Spurgeon’s students was during the peak of the so-called “Downgrade” controversy. Because Spurgeon had called attention to the early signs of drifting from the authority of Scripture, he found himself embroiled in a battle within his own fellowship of churches, the Baptist Union. Eventually, Spurgeon would resign his membership due to the organization’s unsubstantial affirmation of Scripture. The reaction against Spurgeon for his stance no doubt contributed to his failing health.

Even some of the pastors from his own college aligned themselves against Spurgeon, which forced him to establish a new conference. This book is the speech that he delivered to those students, imploring them to receive and deliver the Word of God as absolute, divine truth.
